But unlike Apache, Pivotal Web Server is pre-compiled, pre-configured and pre-patched, which reduces deployment times from a typical 3 days to 30 minutes. It has a consistent installation process and structure across all supported operating systems, and installation is via self-extracting archive, with no requirements as to install location and no dependencies on graphics libraries. You can patch and upgrade multiple instances as well, for further reduction in deployment and support costs.

Pivotal Web Server is built on Apache 2.2, the latest stable version of the popular http server, and runs on RHEL, Windows, and other operating systems. In addition to including Apache httpd and its core modules, Pivotal Web Server has the following module support.

  • mod_ftp, to serve content using the FTP protocol
  • mod_fcgid, a FastCGI implementation that enables you to run Perl and PHP scripts
  • openssl, for securely sending Web pages to browsers using the SSL encryption standard
  • openldap, an open-source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
  • mod_proxy_balancer, for load balancing support for HTTP and FTP protocols
  • mod_jk, which handles communication between Tomcat and Apache
  • mod_bmx, for performance monitoring using VMware vFabric Hyperic
  • libexpat, an XML parser
  • libapr and libaprutil, for API standardization
  • zlib, for content compression

Understanding Pivotal Web Server Pricing

  • As part of VMware Pivotal Suite. Because vFabric Suite is sold on a per-VM basis, we recommend this option for customers who plan to run Pivotal Web Server on vSphere. Learn more about pricing for vFabric Suite Advanced.
  • As a standalone Pivotal Web Server perpetual license. Because this option is priced per physical CPU, we recommend it for customers who plan to run Pivotal Web Server on physical infrastructure, and not on VMware vSphere.

For customers who plan to run Web Server on physical infrastructure, standalone Pivotal Web Server is available as a one-time license under which support and subscription (SnS) contracts can be renewed annually.

VMware offers a choice of support levels for standalone Pivotal Web Server:

  • Production support entitles customers to 24 X 7 support.
  • Basic support entitles customers to 12 X 5 support.

Pricing is per physical CPU, up to 6 cores per CPU. Each additional six cores require an additional license.
